Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences
The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences of Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences was initially established as the Shanghai Municipal Veterinary Clinic and Shanghai Municipal Breeding Animal Farm. In 1960, it was renamed as the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, a Shanghai non-profit research institute, affiliated to SAAS. The institute is mainly engaged in researches and technology developments such as breeding new species and hybridity advantages utilizing of pig and poultry, forage feeding, livestock and poultry epidemic disease prevention, and controls and environment protection.
The institute's major research strengths are in the fields listed as follows:
1. Livestock genetics & breeding
(1) research on pig, cow, and goat genetics and breeding as well as on the promotion of new agricultural technology;
(2) exploitation, preservation, and use of germplasm resources in the local high-quality livestock breeds;
(3) taking advantage of somatic cell cloning technology, embryo transplantation and cryopreservation technology for the preservation and use of local high-quality breeds.
2. Poultry genetics & breeding
(1) Conservation, breeding and improvement of domestic layer germplasm resources;
(2) exploitation and use of new breeds of high-quality yellow-feather broiler;
(3) generation of new breeds of pigeons & waterfowls and introduction, cultivation, and use of high-quality breeds.
3. Sustainable animal husbandry
(1) Technology of healthy breeding and ecological environment protection;
(2) precise nutritional requirement for livestock and poultry & its regulation mechanism, nutrition and immunity.
4. Animal epidemic diseases
(1) Diagnosis and prevention of animal epidemic disease;
(2) Research and development of bio-products;
(3) Disease diagnosis and treatment technologies for companion animals in the city & risk prevention and control methods of zoonoses.
The institute now has well balanced and highly qualified research teams. The research teams are listed as follows:
