The Eco-environmental Protection Research Institute of Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences was established in 2002 based on the former Institute of Environmental Sciences and the Institute of Plant Protection. The institute has 5 technology platforms: Shanghai Scientific Observation and Experimental Station for Agricultural Environment and Land Conservation, Shanghai Environmental Protection Monitoring Station of Agriculture, Shanghai Engineering Research Centre of Low-carbon Agriculture (SERLA), Shanghai Key Laboratory of Protected Horticultural Technology and Evaluation of Pesticide Field Efficacy Test in Agricultural and Rural Areas. The institute’s laboratory covers an area of more than 5,000 square meters and its Ecological Experimental Base in Zhuanghang Comprehensive Experimental Station occupies over 100 acres.

The institute provides strong technical support and guarantee for promoting Chinese ecological environment protection and sustainable development of agriculture. Its major advantaged research fields are the efficient ecological planting and cultivation model study, soil remediation & conservation and low carbon & recycling agriculture.

1. Efficient Ecological Planting and Cultivation Model

It is a sustainable development model of farmland with highly efficient circle. The model could establish an ecological chain production process of increasing farmland yield and value, break the traditional  single planting mode of farmland, make coupling use of the characteristics of different organisms(vegetables, rice, earthworms, Monopterus Albus, Loach, etc.), improve the internal circulation and "self-purification" function of farmland material, realize the reduction and efficiency of fertilizer and pesticide application in farmland, as well as improve the ecological and economic benefits of farmland.

2. Soil Remediation and Conservation

(1) Testing and risk assessment of agricultural soil

(2) Heavy metal migration and transformation in soil

(3) Remediation and conservation technologies in contaminated soil

3.  Low Carbon and Recycling Agriculture

(1) Climate change & Carbon sequestration and GHGs mitigation

(2) Agricultural solid waste recycle and disposal

(3) Rural sewage treatment and non-point source pollution control

The research teams of the institute are listed as follows:

  • Environmental Monitoring Team

Interested AreasData automatic monitoring platform and real-time collection of agricultural production system, agricultural producing area environment big data, high efficiency ecological three-dimensional planting and cultivation model based on biodiversity and food web nutrition dynamics, farmland problem soil formation mechanism, farmland problem soil biological remediation technology and products, agricultural waste biological innocuous treatment and resource utilization model.
