On October 21st, local time in Cape Verde, Dr. Hu Yingxiong from the Maize Research Center of Crop Breeding and Cultivation Research Institute, SAAS held a field tasting event for fresh sweet corn at the National Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (INIDA) in the São Jorge region of Santiago Island, Cape Verde. The event was attended by INIDA's Director Nora Silva and Deputy Director Jacques Tavares, along with more than 30 INIDA staff members and local farmers from the São Jorge region.
The event featured a tasting of high-quality fresh sweet corn varieties, including "Shenke Nuo 602," "Shenke Nuo 191," and "Shenke Tian 811," which were recently bred by the Maize Research Center of SAAS. Local farmers inspected the growth conditions of the various sweet corn varieties in the field and measured their agronomic traits, followed by on-site steaming and tasting. During the event, Dr. Hu introduced the characteristics of the sweet and waxy corn varieties, the differences in kernel color and taste, as well as key points of field cultivation techniques, and engaged in Q&A and interactive discussions. Based on the feedback from the participants, it was generally believed that the white waxy corn better met the taste preferences of the local people and had a promising future for promotion.
