On Jan. 14th, the kick-off meeting of the Horizon Europe project on unlocking the potential of agricultural residues and wastes for circular and sustainable bio-based solutions was held online. 26 partners from 9 countries across China and EU, including members from SAAS International Cooperation Office and the Pollutants Assessment of Origin research team, joined the meeting. This meeting was supported by Hungary Fermentia Ltd.

Professor SONG Weiguo, a researcher of the Institute of Agro-food Standards and Testing Technology of SAAS, introduced the general information of the institute and the works his research team has already carried out in the field of agricultural waste resources safety risk assessment. He put forward research ideas and suggestions for the relevant standards and safety risk assessment of agricultural residues and wastes’ cyclic utilization in China under the first and fifth topics of the project. During the meeting, the project’s title abbreviation, work allocation, program design, promotion and application, individual advantages and other subjects were thoroughly discussed by all participated scientists and experts.

This project meets the requirements raised by the guidelines of the EU-2022 Horizon program. The study not only helps to facilitate the cyclic utilization and sustainable development of agricultural residues and wastes in Europe and China but also strengthens the international communication between European and Chinese scholars in the fields of agricultural residues and wastes, which is substantially conducive to further develop the global sci-tech academic communication and cooperation of SAAS.
