From Oct. 13th to Nov. 1st, the Institute of Edible Fungi of SAAS successfully hosted the “International Training Workshop on Edible & Medicinal Mushroom Production Technology” with the sponsorship from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. This year, the workshop has 32 trainees from 8 countries including Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, India, Thailand, North Korea, Sri Lanka and Kenya.

Because of the pandemic, the workshop was held via providing online courses. The front-line SAAS sci-tech scientists undertook the major teaching tasks while Pro. FAN Hua from Charité Universitäts Medizin Berlin and Researcher LI Taihui from Guangdong Institute of Microbiology also presented lectures and training courses. Due to the different domestic situations of the trainees, the workshop provided all sets of theoretical courses, practical operation courses and field works after doing thorough previous research and huge amount of video filming works. The online workshop is highly praised by all trainees as it truly satisfied their various demands through providing real-time online class and video teaching materials at the same time.
Aiming to establish international cooperative friendship and achieve better mutual understandings, the workshop facilitates the multilateral communication in the field of edible fungi between China and other developing countries indeed. Through the workshop, those developing countries could know better about Chinese edible fungi cultivation culture & traditions, China’s advantages in edible fungi production, and how to develop their own characteristic edible fungus species as well, which has laid a solid foundation for our future cooperation.

Due to the good performance in previous training courses, many SAAS experts were invited to Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries to attend edible fungi seminars and present keynote speeches. On the basis of  previous training experiences, SAAS reached a preliminary agreement with the Institute of Life Sciences of The University of Malaya in Malaysia to conduct cooperative research in the field of edible and medicinal fungi. According to the agreement, we have exchanged strains, arranged scientific visits and conducted short-term training for the staff of the University of Malaya. SAAS has been conducting an international cooperation project sponsored by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality with the University of Malaya in constructing the germplasm bank of important Southeast-Asia edible & medicinal fungi since 2018.

Besides that, in 2014, the Institute of Edible Fungi of SAAS began to implement the international cooperation project "Uganda Edible Fungi Production Optimization Project" with the Institute of Food Research of UK and Guizhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Based on this project, SAAS signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Uganda Industrial Research Centre.

Moreover, during the implementation of this project, Dr. Perpetua Ipulet from Uganda Makerere University attended the “2014 International Training Workshop on Edible & Medicinal Mushroom Production Technology”. After completing his study and came back to Uganda, he established the Mushroom Training Faculty at College of Natural Sciences of the Uganda Makerere University. This training faculty is an experiment base for Makerere University’s edible fungi education and  is responsible for Uganda’s national edible fungi technical training schemes, with the technological supports from SAAS.
