Academic Presentation by NMRI Maize Breeder Tran Quang Dieu

On September 18th, NMRI (National Maize Research Institute of Vietnam) scientist Tran Quang Dieu made an academic presentation at the Crop Breeding and Cultivation Research Institute concerning his international cooperation project with SAAS. The presentation was hosted by the director of the institute, Cao Liming, and attracted more than 30 SAAS researchers and graduate students to attend.

Tran’s presentation is named ‘Maize breeding in Vietnam’. He introduced the distribution of maize germplasm resources, the maize variety breeding orientation and the current maize industrialization development situation in Vietnam in detail. Tran looks forward to strengthening the cooperation with institute’s Specialty Maize Research Center in variety breeding and further jointly promoting the Sino-Vietnam science and technology development.

The participants had thorough and sophisticated discussion concerning the existing problems of maize variety breeding and maize industry internationalization development.

 

Expert Introduction

Tran Quang Dieu, scientist of national maize research institute of Vietnam (NMRI). He works as junior maize breeder at maize breeding department of NMRI from July, 2011. He has a lot of experience with precision phenotyping for drought and salinity tolerance, evaluation of genetic diversity of germplasm, implementation of demonstrations and other field works. Tran took part in the following projects: Hybrid maize breeding for abiotic stress region (2011-2015); Affordable, Accessible Asian (A.A.A) Drought Tolerant Maize Project (2012-2013);Climate resilient maize for Asia (2016-2018); Breeding for early maturity and high yield of hybrid maize for central provinces of Vietnam (2017-2019); Breeding sweet corn and waxy corn with high yield and good quality for the Northern provinces of Vietnam (2017-2021); Improving research capability, mastering technologies for hybrid maize breeding with high yield, good quality, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance adapting to climate change (2018-2019); Development of waxy corn variety DT10 (2018-2019); Especially, he is a co-author of 2 new hybrid maize varieties, VS36 and VS71.
