Protected Horticulture Research Institute
The Protected Horticultural Research Institute was established in April 1960. It is the only professional research institute engaged in the research of breeding and cultivation techniques of new varieties of vegetables and melons in Shanghai. It is one of the top 100 national institute of agricultural research and development.
Through the hard work of several generations, our vegetable and melon breeders have developed various breeding methods through heterosis breeding, including green vegetables, cabbage, broccoli, tomato, cucumber, eggplant, sweet pepper, watermelon, melon, pumpkin, edamame and specialty vegetables. A total of 10 categories of related varieties and more than 90 related patents. In the past 10 years, the project hosted by Horticulture has won 1 first prize, 3 second prizes and 8 third prizes in Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and more than 300 academic papers have been published. It has also carried out research and promotion of high-yield, high-efficiency, safe and annual supply cultivation techniques of vegetables and fruits for various infrastructures and protected area facilities, and contributed to the development of vegetable industry in different periods in Shanghai and surrounding areas.
The institute has now a young and middle-aged research team with doctoral and master's degrees. It has 80 employees and 60 scientific and technical personnel, including 25 senior titles, 14 doctors and 29 masters. It has a facility horticultural research room, a melon breeding research laboratory, a cruciferous leafy breeding and cultivation research laboratory, a special vegetable breeding and a seedling technology research laboratory. Our Institute mainly engaged in the selection and cultivation of new varieties of vegetables and melons, breeding of featured horticultural crops, seed processing technology, etc. Our institute is the key laboratory of facility horticultural technology of Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Shanghai National Vegetable Improvement Sub-center, Shanghai Green Leaf Vegetable industry technology system, national bulk vegetable industry technology system Shanghai test station, Shanghai green leaf vegetable breeding center technical support unit.
